Composer:
Franz Peter Schubert (German pronunciation: [ˈfʁants ˈʃuːbɛɐ̯t]
January 31, 1797 -- November 19, 1828
Franz Schubert was an Austrian composer.
Although he died at an early age, Schubert was tremendously prolific. He wrote some 600 Lieder, nine symphonies (including the famous "Unfinished Symphony"), liturgical music, operas, some incidental music, and a large body of chamber and solo piano music. Appreciation of his music during his lifetime was limited, but interest in Schubert's work increased dramatically in the decades following his death at the age of 31. Franz Liszt, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms and Felix Mendelssohn, among others, discovered and championed his works in the 19th Century. Today, Schubert is admired as one of the leading exponents of the early Romantic era in music and he remains one of the most frequently performed composers.
Serenade is one of Schubert's small pieces printed shortly after his death (while the manuscripts of many of the longer works, whose existence was not widely known, remained hidden in cabinets and file boxes of Schubert's family, friends, and publishers: even some of Schubert's friends were unaware of the full scope of what he wrote)
A posthumous collection of songs by Franz Schubert, published shortly after his death is called Schwanengesang ("Swan song"). Schwanengesang was composed 1828 and published in 1829 just a few months after the composer's death on November 19, 1828.
Unlike the earlier Die schöne Müllerin and Winterreise, this Anthology like collection uses poems by three poets, Ludwig Rellstab (1799--1860), Heinrich Heine (1797--1856) and Johann Gabriel Seidl (1804-1875). Schwanengesang has the number D 957 in the Deutsch catalogue.
In the original manuscript in Schubert's hand, the first 13 songs were copied in a single sitting, on consecutive manuscript pages, and in the standard performance order. All the song titles are by Schubert, as Heine did not give names to the poems. ...Franz Liszt later transcribed these songs for solo piano.
In the song listing of Schwanengesang, as found in Schubert's manuscript, Serenade is number 4 among songs on lyrics by Ludwig Rellstab:
Liebesbotschaft (Message of love)
Kriegers Ahnung (Warrior's foreboding)
Frühlingssehnsucht (Longing in spring)
Ständchen (Serenade, the singer exhorts his lover to make him happy)
Aufenthalt (Dwelling place)
In der Ferne (In the distance)
Abschied (Farewell)
The following list of songs on lyrics by Heinrich Heine includes:
Der Atlas (Atlas)
Ihr Bild (Her image)
Das Fischermädchen (The fisher-maiden)
Die Stadt (The city)
Am Meer (By the sea)
Der Doppelgänger (The double)
And there is the last song based on a poem written by Johann Gabriel Seidl:
Taubenpost (Pigeon post)
Schubert also set to music a poem named Schwanengesang by Johann Senn, unrelated to this collection (number D744 in the Deutsch catalogue).
But what musical form Serenade is about?
In music, a serenade (or sometimes serenata) is a musical composition, and/or performance, in someone's honor. Serenades are typically calm, light music. The word Serenade is derived from the Italian word sereno, which means calm.
Usually the character of the work is lighter than other multiple-movement works for large ensemble (for example the symphony), with tunefulness being more important than thematic development or dramatic intensity. Most of these works are from Italy, Germany, Austria and Bohemia.
Because of such a nature Serenades in general, and Serenade by Schubert in particular, with an appropriate motion picture can help heal saddness, loneliness, emptiness, grief and depression naturally, just remember that life goes on, and that you was born to be on its' bright side. Period.
